In our body, every organ is paired but some important organs are unpaired. The Heart is the most important unpaired organ of our body that maintains total circulation and thus cells of our body get nutrition. Work with heart was such a dream in our country once. But the barrier between dream and reality was first crossed in 1978. The specialty of cardiac surgery was developed in 1980s by our pioneer Professor S.R. Khan and late Professor M. Nabi Alam Khan. Since then we are developing this subject gradually. Now we are doing well compare to rest of the world. I, myself started my career as a cardiac surgeon in early 1992s. In this long journey of my career, I devoted myself to the service of humanity and development of cardiac surgery. Since cardiac surgery started in late 1980s, Vascular surgery and Thoracic surgery started in our country as well. Now different institutions work in the field of cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery in Bangladesh. BSMMU and NICVD leads cardiovascular surgery and NIDCH and DMCH leads thoracic surgery in government sector. There are some private sectors also do excellent works in the field of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. Every year we make one step ahead than previous in our own surgical field. With the ideas come from our pioneer professors, BACVTS started its journey in 2008-2009. Our aim is to keep all cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgeons under the same roof. And today, we are a big community that flourishes towards prosper. We did ATCSA conference in 2016 successfully. We arrange several meetings and CME programmes regularly. I wish every success of this association so that in recent future we all the cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgeons of the Bangladesh will become greatest in the world.
Historical background is always important to begin a great task for better future. So, I like to mention the history of cardiac surgery in a nutshell with paying my tribute to the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Cardiac surgery as a specialty was nonexistent in Bangladesh until late 1970s. Before liberation war, in late 1960s, some general surgeons attempted CMC operation underguidance of national Professor Brig. Gen. A. Malik that time. But first successful CMC closed heart surgery was done by late Professor M. Nabi Alam Khan at NICVD in 1978. This is a milestone of cardiac surgery in Bangladesh. After some attempt first ever successful open heart surgery in Bangladesh in 1981 by surgical closure of ASD in NICVD. Since then our cardiac surgeons do excellent surgeries in both government and private sectors. Nowadays more complex cadiac surgeries are done by using modern techniques in our country. NICVD as a mother institute it plays leading role in cardiac surgery and vascular surgery as well in our country. Every year thousands of cases treated in NICVD. It also produces excellent of cardiovascular surgeons every year. During 2008-2009 BACVTS was formed to make a single platform for cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgeons. The concept was first come from professor S.R. Khan and late Professor Emeritus N. Nabi Alam Khan. Till then we successfully run this organization and work for cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgeons of Bangladesh. Our aim is to unite all the surgeons and make our own field of surgery is safer, developed and such efficient that we can be one of the best places of cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery in the world. At last I wish every success of this organization and its members.
